Applicants answered a series of written questions and were interviewed by a selection committee. Ferris, 16, wrote on his application, “The simple fact of the matter is that we are all capable of what we set our minds to. This would be the message I would try to deliver to our school and to the world.”

The leadership award is a tuition-free, three-week program at the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School.

“Outward Bound is the perfect partner for this award,” said Jim Foley, director of the Center for Leadership (CFL).

“Their focus on using wilderness expeditions to hone leadership, teamwork and tenacity is in line with the Center for Leadership’s motto, ‘Find Your Voice - Make a Difference.”
