One good way of reducing our carbon footprint is to limit our use of leaf blowers. Testing by the respected Edmunds car research firm showed that under normal use, a leaf blower emits almost 300 times the amount of global warming-causing hydrocarbons as a pickup truck and 93 times the amount of a sedan.

Cutting back on leaf blower use will also make our neighborhoods quieter and reduce a source of airborne dust and particles that can trigger asthma attacks, especially among children. Alternatives? Try raking or mulching leaves. Or use leaf blowers once a month instead of every week.
