Pound Ridge Library Embraces New Role With Interior Upgrades

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – While the Pound Ridge Library has been undergoing a face-lift on its exterior with new siding, fresh paint and new roof shingles, its interior has also been getting a makeover that’s both aesthetic and utilitarian.

“We have a dress-up committee and we’ve been discussing the general idea to make the library warmer and more welcoming and bring it into the 21st century,” said Library Director Marilyn Tinter.

Part of the change is the addition of a new information desk, a new circulation desk, shelves, desks and chairs. The renovations actually began in December when the information and circulation desks were installed, but more shelving was recently added and plans for an expanded computer area in the rear of the building are in the works.

Tinter said the aesthetic changes go hand in hand with the library’s upgrade in services.

“Everything at the information desk has evolved,” she said. “We are getting away from the old-fashioned reference books and are using other technology. The people we are serving are savvier, and we are trying to help them keep up – even stay one step ahead.”

Tinter said that high school-age patrons should benefit the most by the library’s approach to research.

“Some of them think that just because it’s on the Internet, it’s a fact,” she said. “We explain to them that you have to check several sources and show them how to do it.”

While the library has long had desktop computers available to its customers, as well as free Wifi, it soon will offer patrons iPads and laptops that they can borrow and use within the library.

“The whole idea is to improve the patron’s experience,” Tinter said. “We have a lot of people who come in because their computer isn’t working or their power is down.”

Tinter notes that the role of a public library has changed over the past decade and that it is no longer just a place to check out a book. It has become more of a community center that offers myriad services, and it is important to make it as homey as possible.

“We have some beautiful views from out windows here; it’s attractive and beckoning,” she said. “We are trying to make our space more efficient and we are improving the lighting. We are excited about the changes and we’re not finished yet.”
