“It takes a whole week to move the books out, and another week to replace them,” said Library Board Vice-President Peter Clough. “The work itself will take about two weeks.

“We hired a consultant to do a survey and found that people wanted a nicer Children’s Room and many people complained of an odor in the building,” Clough said. “Then an environmental consultant discovered we had mold and asbestos. Most of that has been remediated, but the ceiling tiles have traces of asbestos, so we have to take care of that.”

The work will mostly be focused on the Children’s Room, he said.

“It’s our first really meaningful improvement. We hope that people will come in and say, ‘Wow!’”

Clough said that more light, renewed books and better story hours are among the improvements but, “I don’t want to give too much away.”

The library already has a new roof and drainage problems have been corrected. “The board’s goal is to have new and better standards. We’re hoping for a better library and happier patrons,” he said. The funding for the improvements is coming mainly from the library’s endowment.

The library will be closed between July 2 and July 27 and will reopen on Tuesday, July 30 at 10 a.m.

All items that have been borrowed from the Pound Ridge library collection will have an extended loan period, ending July 31.

Items that have been borrowed through the Westchester Library System do not qualify for an extended loan, and can be returned to any other Westchester library.

If you wish to place a Hold on something during the hiatus, you can do so through another Westchester library and pick it up there as well.

Summer programming for all ages will resume in August.
