POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- The Pound Ridge Daily Voice accepts signed letters to the editor. Send letters to .

I remember Aug. 23, 2009 like it was yesterday.  It was ‘Pound Ridge Day’ at the PR Golf Course and I was enjoying myself on the front nine.  When you’re a mediocre golfer and have suddenly overachieved on your first 7 holes (with your wife watching to boot) it’s a good day.  Then came the tee shot at the 8th.  Ball right down the center of the fairway --head of the driver due West into the swamp left of the tee box.  Round of fun –over.

Later at the 19th hole, I was whining to some friends about how great the back 9 would’ve gone if only my club hadn’t broke.  No one was buying it, but they enjoyed some laughs at my expense.  Before I left, I noticed a tall gentleman with a mustache that could’ve shielded us from the rain we had that afternoon.  Had no idea who he was, but he was friendly and was shaking hands, including mine.  Off I went to Sunday dinner.

The next morning, my phone rang.  It was the man with that ‘stache.  He called to tell me that he and a couple of guys from the club had gone into the swamp and found the head of my favorite driver.  I couldn’t believe it.  But then… I didn’t really know Dick Lyman.

This is a man who embodies what it means to be a Pound Ridger, every day.  Dick is always there with a helping hand because it’s in his DNA.  In return, he asks only that others follow his lead and pick up that service baton.  It’s rare to have people of such character run for public office.

Make your way around Pound Ridge and chances are good that you’ll walk by, on or through something that Dick Lyman has designed, improved or personally helped build himself.  His mark is all over this wonderful town.  Don’t take my word for it, ask around –or check out his resume on

Truth be told, Dick is not a great politician –he’s too humble and too honest.  This, however, is what makes him perfect for supervisor.  His substance is his style.  People in other towns would be falling over themselves to have someone like this running the show.  We are lucky he’s never left and that a person with his integrity is willing to serve us yet again, as he has for most of his life.

Someday, there will be a statue of Richard Lyman in town.  What will people say?  That he was a good man?  That he loved Pound Ridge more deeply than most of us could fathom?  That he was trustworthy, competent, intelligent, diligent and respectful?   That he cherished his family above all else?  Yes, yes, yes and yes.  But before all that, the keys to the townhouse should find their way to him.  Not because he deserves anything –but because he’s earned it.  Because Pound Ridge is better off in the hands of a man like him. Dick Lyman for supervisor. Joe Malichio
