POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – The Garden Conservancy’s Open Days Program of 2013 officially started on April 28, with a selection of private gardens from California to New York open to the public for a day.

Within a short distance of Pound Ridge, the gardens of Judy and Michael Steinhardt in Mt. Kisco will be open on Sunday, May 5. The Stamford gardens of S. Jason Karbel and Sara Sherlock Karbel will be open May 11.

The Steinhardt gardens cover 55 acres and include more than 2,000 species of trees, shrubs and perennials. There is an extensive Japanese maple garden, and stepping-stone stairways, pine paths, and stone outcroppings make the terrain unique. The garden has been featured in Architectural Digest, Garden Design, House Beautiful and several other publications.

In contrast, the Karbel gardens cover a single acre, but it is a woodland dream, covered with dogwoods, azaleas, perennials and biennials. It was created by the late Jim and Ruth Levitan over a 40-year period and is being carefully maintained by the property’s new owners.

Lewisboro’s White Garden, which was open on April 28, will be open again on Sept. 8. The White Garden was designed in 1999 by award-winning landscape architect, Patrick Chassé. The gardens that surround the Greek Revival-style house are classically inspired, while elsewhere there is a conservatory “jungle” garden and an Asian-inspired moss garden. In the spring, more than 200,000 daffodils bloom in the woodland. Head gardener, Eric Schmidt, will be on hand to answer questions.
