POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- Following the successful presentation of its seventh college-level seminar, The Pound Ridge Library is continuing a new educational concept: a series of DVD college-level seminars from The Teaching Company/Great Courses on a wide variety of subjects, presented by outstanding scholars from many of the major universities in the United States.

This program, the first and only of its kind in the country, is designed to provide a collegial, small-group setting for courses “you didn’t get a chance to take in college, but wanted to.”

The subject matter of the seminars is quite extensive and delves into history, art, religion, science, linguistics and other subjects. This series of seminars, designed and moderated by Lawrence Brotmann of Pound Ridge consists of a series of four 30-minute lectures, given weekly, usually for periods of three to 12 weeks per course. Since each lecture will include group discussions, the size of the group will be limited. The eighth of these DVD seminars, “Before 1776: Life in the American Colonies,” will be given by Professor Robert Allison of Suffolk University on Thursdays, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. (with discussion following) from Thursday, Sept. 4 through Thursday, Nov. 6.

The remaining courses for the 2014-15 series (dates to be announced) are: “Masterpieces of American Art,” “Lost Christianities: Battle for Authentication,” “The Medieval World” and “Introduction to Genealogy.” Future courses will include: “History of the English Language,” “Joy of Mathematics,” “The French Revolution,” “Comparative Religion.” All the seminars will be held at the Pound Ridge Library, Schaffner Room. Light refreshments will be served. The seminars are free and open to the public, but registration is recommended. The Library is at 271 Westchester Ave. in Pound Ridge.
