WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. AND FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Furniture shoppers in Westchester County and Fairfield County comprise nearly 50 percent of the business at Hunt Country Furniture in Wingdale, N.Y.

“It doesn’t really surprise me how far people are willing to travel,’’ said Gail Richards, manager of the Wingdale Showroom, whose store is 25 minutes from upper Westchester and Fairfield County, an hour from White Plains and many Fairfield County communities. “People are coming back to quality. They know we’ve been here for 87 years and they trust us. We feel that the new luxury today is exemplary customer service. Our customers are like family to us.”

Hunt’s attention to detail is evident on every piece of handcrafted furniture, incorporating age-old techniques such as dovetailed drawers, mortise and tenon joinery, draw-knife edging, hand wedged spindles and box-shaved pine.

“Our techniques are ones you don’t see much in furniture making any more,’’ Richards said. “They define the difference between disposable furniture and furniture that will be passed down in your family for generations to come. Everything is built right here by master craftsmen. We can build anything you want. And our prices are competitive. You’re getting great quality and you know it’s locally made.”

Hunt Country Furniture previously had showrooms in Wilton and Westport, and many customers from Fairfield County stayed loyal to the brand. Many customers have second homes in upstate New York adorned with Hunt Country Furniture products.

“We offer dining rooms, bedrooms, living rooms, home offices, home entertainment, youth furniture and accessories,’’ Richards said. “Custom kitchens have grown tremendously over the past five  years or so. Customers love designing their kitchens knowing that every inch will be usable space. We never use standard boxes with fillers. Many details that are upgrades in mass-produced kitchens are standard in a Hunt kitchen. With a wide array of wood species and stain/paint colors our customers can truly personalize their look and style.

“We encourage people to shop around,’’ Richards added. “We truly feel that we have the best value and the quality is there.”

Hunt Country Furniture is made from Northeast hardwoods, primarily cherry, red oak and white pine. Specialty woods include tiger maple and black walnut among others.

Richards said Hunt’s strong presence in the commercial field has helped the company’s growth considerably. Hunt’s Commercial division provides furniture for hotels, restaurants, bed and breakfasts and educational institutions as well as contract kitchen work for builders in Westchester and Fairfield County.

The Wingdale showroom is in a home built in 1747 and was the home of Lockwood and Julian Hunt, who started the business in 1926. Hunt Country Furniture also has a factory store in Dover Plains, and two stores in Eastern Pennsylvania.

The Hunt brothers would be proud that the company has retained the commitment to craftsmanship they started 87 years ago.

“We haven’t compromised any of the techniques in making the furniture,’’ Richards said.  The lines are so simple. It’s not early American or Colonial. It works in any country or contemporary home. It’s transitional and it’s timeless.”
