Somers' Horne, Pires: 'Special Group, Family Atmosphere Got Us To Dome'

SOMERS, N.Y. -- It takes a special group of players, a special coaching staff and a lot of hard work to make it to the state championship game.

The Somers High School football team, coached by Tony DeMatteo, had the perfect storm this season, according to seniors Messiah Horne and Matt Pires.

The dynamic duo led a Tusker fourth-quarter explosion for Somers in Friday night's state semifinal against Burnt Hills that turned a close game into a 48-24 blowout.

Somers put four unanswered touchdowns on the board during a 27-7 scoring tear, earning the program's first-ever trip to Syracuse.

Horne scored three of his four touchdowns in that fourth quarter, and Pires finished the game with three TDs.
