BEDFORD, N.Y. – The Fox Lane High School boys soccer team suffered a devastating 2-1 loss to Westlake on Wednesday in the Foxes’ first league game of the season.

Westlake’s Edgar Solis fired a shot to the left post and past the goalkeeper with less than four minutes remaining to help the Wildcats avoid overtime and drop Fox Lane to 0-1 in the league and 1-3 overall.

Fox Lane coach J.R. Pouncey, now in his fourth year as varsity head coach for the Foxes, actually missed most of the deciding sequence.

“I missed a lot of it because I was actually trying to get the refs’ attention. I thought they had a foul there,” Pouncey said. “So I actually missed most of the play.”

Pouncey said a Westlake player was bound to score sooner or later, and he made no excuses for his team.

“We had it coming. They were attacking us wave after wave for an entire game,” Pouncey said. “So we were fortunate to only give up two goals.”

The coach said a lapse in the team’s schedule could have played into Wednesday’s loss, but he made it clear that the Wildcats earned the victory.

“We had a holiday weekend. I just think my guys came out flat and their heads weren’t in it,” Pouncey said. “They made a lot of mistakes, and credit to Westlake for coming out and taking it to us and finishing their opportunities where we didn’t. So they deserved to beat us today.”

Fox Lane next plays at home on Friday against Pleasantville.
