White Plains High School Students' Success Honored

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – A group of 18 White Plains High School students will be recognized Saturday for their academic achievement, leadership and community service at the city Youth Bureau’s annual Achievement Week program.

The White Plains students are among 100 people to be recognized at the free event, which is open to the public and done in collaboration with the Beta Alpha Alpha chapter of Omega Psi Phi fraternity.

The program also honors community leaders for their service. This year, they include Kenneth Jenkins (D-Yonkers), chair of the county Board of Legislators, who will be named Omega Citizen of the Year. Other honorees are:

  • Steven Schmidt - Omega Man of the Year
  • Doris Friedman - Golden Age Award
  • Sheila Baptista - Business Person of the Year
  • Judge Theodore T. Jones, Grant Reynolds Courage Award (posthumously)

The keynote speaker is Gerald Inman Jr., a professional basketball player overseas who wrote an autobiography about his journey and the importance of making a plan for life beyond the hardwood. Within five years of retirement, 78 percent of all NFL players and 60 percent of all NBA players face bankruptcy or financial hardship, Inman said in his book, "When the Air Comes Out of the Ball."

The event will begin at noon at Eastview Middle School, 128 Grandview Ave. The White Plains students being honored are:
