In his address to the Class of 2014, Bates commented on an element of St. Luke’s “DNA."

"I’m reminded more now than ever, that St. Luke’s is a kind school," said Bates. "Kindness is part of our institutional DNA: it is writ large on the banners in the parking lot, on the main building’s new façade. More importantly, kindness is embedded in the heart and soul of our faculty, in the caring that teachers like Ms. Spencer and Dr. Haynes exhibit every day, and in our student body, which promises every year to uphold that virtue as part of the Honor Code.

"Maybe all of us will reach fame and fortune – and perhaps none of us will. But, no matter who we become or where we end up, I hope that we keep being kind to one another and, more importantly, I hope that we will be kind to each and every person we meet out there on this wounded planet. I hope that, every day, we live up to the ideal of cheerful service that has been set for us here at St. Luke’s.”
