POUND RIDGE, N.Y. Pound Ridge Elementary School (PRES) has postponed its leukemia awareness and fundraiser project School Spirit Fridays by one week.
Instead of beginning on Friday, Feb. 3 and ending March 23, the event will be held Feb. 10 through March 9.
Starting on Friday, Feb. 10, and each Friday through March 9, students will wear either red, orange or purple clothing to show their support for Pound Ridge Elementarys efforts to help further research and patient aid for blood cancers such as leukemia.
The red and orange are the colors for leukemia awareness and purple is the universal cancer awareness color.
The awareness programs and the fundraiser that will coincide with them are in honor of Pound Ridge Elementary student Frankie Dezell, who has been diagnosed with leukemia.
To raise money to donate to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, each student will take home a donation box. Their families can then fill the boxes with spare change throughout the week and then return them to the school every Friday during the event period.
Also, every Friday throughout the program, teachers will take of head count of the colors the students are wearing that day and the totals will be tracked on a giant mural set up in one of the schools corridors. On March 9, the winning color will be announced.
