BEDFORD, N.Y. -- Band and chorus students from Fox Lane Middle School in Bedford performed in Washington D.C. earlier this month.

The Bel Canto Vocal Ensemble and Symphonic Winds, two select musical ensembles representing the Chorus and Band programs at the Middle School, spent three days in D.C., performing and touring with a certified historical tour guide. The groups performed in the Festival of the States for the 70th Anniversary of the Normandy Invasion, according to a press release.

"The highlight of the trip was the performance for visitors to the World War II Memorial on the National Mall. Many Veterans from this war were in attendance as well as current military and other school groups," representatives said in a press release. "Facing the Washington Monument and with the reflecting pool and Lincoln Memorial directly behind, the groups played a selection comprised largely of American composed music. Students also laid a wreath from FLMS at the memorial."

Students toured several sites, including the Marine Barracks, Arlington National Cemetery, Library of Congress, Capitol, White House, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Washington Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and Smithsonian Museum for American History and Museum of Air and Space. FLMS students were ambassadors of C.A.R.E. and the excellent music program of BCSD.

"Tour coordinators remarked on the advanced repertoire and quality of the performances, putting Bel Canto and Symphonic Winds on a par with high school and even college groups that also participated in the festival," school officials said in the release.
