Bedford School District’s Capital Plan Unveiled

BEDFORD, N.Y. – A study by a Bedford school district committee has resulted in a recommendation by the administration that the district renovate West Patent Elementary School into a “green” building, modernize the 50-year-old science labs at Fox Lane Middle School, and maintain a 10-year cycle of stadium renovations.

The recommendations came last week after the school district’s Citizens Committee for Capital Planning spent a year examining the conditions of all the district’s buildings.

“We’re very excited about the concepts and possibilities in this innovative yet prudent plan,” said Schools Superintendent Jere Hochman.

The plan also calls for completing “first-priority” infrastructure needs in all district buildings.

School Board President Susan Elion Wollin said the board welcomed the administration’s recommended capital plan and looks forward to learning more about cost, time lines, and community engagement at its next meeting on June 27.

While the essential concepts and guiding principles of the plan have been laid out, the administration will present the concepts with more specificity and a draft timeline for the planning process at the June 27 meeting.

Mark Betz, the district assistant superintendent for business, said that the administration is excited about the opportunities presented within the plan.

“We realize there has been a delay since we first spoke about addressing the conditions at West Patent and the Fox Lane Middle School,” he said. “However, during this time we have been able to regroup and refocus on how best to proceed prudently and most advantageous to our community.”
