School board President Jennifer Gerken, a two-term incumbent who lives in Bedford, is facing a challenge from neighbor Michelle Brooks. Fellow two-term incumbent Suzanne Grant, a Mount Kisco resident, is facing a challenge from Pound Ridge's Pam Harney. Michael Solomon, a one-term incumbent and Pound Ridge resident, faces a challenge from outgoing district Athletic Director Beth Staropoli.
Staropoli, who lives in Mount Kisco and is also a Fox Lane High School alumnus, is retiring on June 30.
In Bedford Central, board members run for specific seats, which correspond to the entire district for constituencies. The system is different from the district's neighboring counterparts, which use an "at-large" system where the top vote-earners win elections in order of their performance and in relation to seats available.
The school board is made up of seven members who serve in staggered, three-year terms. The three seats that are up for elections this year have terms that will run from July 1 to June 30, 2019.
The elections will be held on Tuesday, May 17 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Residents' locally zoned elementary schools will serve as their polling places. Further election details are available here.
The elections will be on the ballot along with the proposed 2016-17 budget, which includes an override of the state-mandated tax levy cap. A 60-percent supermajority is required to approve a cap override.
