Chambers has been a top administrator been several school districts across the Hudson Valley. Bedford Central's announcement notes that Chambers served as superintendent in Bronxville from 1991 to 2001 and then in Byram Hills from 2001 to 2008.. Prior to that, the district notes, he served as a principal at John Jay High School and at Scarsdale High School.
Chambers, who has work with superintendent recruiting firm Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates, has also served as an interim superintendent in Chappaqua and Haldane, the district adds.
Chambers is taking over for Jere Hochman, whose last day as superintendent was on Friday. Hochman is leaving Bedford Central after seven years to become deputy state education commissioner.
“I welcome the opportunity to introduce myself to the Bedford Central community and work with the district’s outstanding staff and administrative leaders in the best interests of every student,” Chambers said in a statement. “There is quite a lot we can accomplish together through the end of the school year and I am ready to get right to work.”
Last year, Chambers assisted Katonah-Lewisboro with its superintendent search. Katonah-Lewisboro's school board chose Andrew Selesnick, an assistant superintendent from Chappaqua.
“In addition to John Chambers’ exceptional reputation and strong track record as a Superintendent and Interim Superintendent, he is very familiar with Bedford Central and our community,” Bedford Central school board President Jennifer Gerken said in a statement. “We are confident Mr. Chambers is uniquely qualified to lead Bedford Central during this transition, attend to the needs of students, stakeholders, and staff alike and move us forward on key district initiatives.”
The school district anticipates hiring a firm to assist with its search for a new superintendent, which it hopes to have picked in time to start by July 1, 2016.
