Curtis Thomas Jr. was at his Valley Township home on Sept. 11, 2019, with the teenager he was then dating and "many eyewitnesses," said District Attorney Deb Ryan.
At some point, prosecutors said Thomas and the victim had an argument, during which the 31-year-old "choked her with his hands around her neck until she lost consciousness," the DA wrote. Later, he hit her several times on the face, neck, and chest, leaving lacerations and bruising, authorities added.
Ryan said that none of the "many eyewitnesses" intervened on the teen victim's behalf.
“Domestic violence will never be tolerated. The horrific actions of the defendant against a teenage victim and his attempt to control, hurt, and demean her in front of others is something that no one should be subjected to," the DA said.
"It takes great courage to come forward against an abuser. It also takes immense cowardice to stand by and let it happen."
Thomas was convicted of strangulation and simple assault, she added.
