The Village Lutheran Church in Bronxville recently took up a special collection for Military Biblesticks, a program that provides deployed service men and women with audio devices pre-installed with various religious readings.

The Biblesticks come installed with the entire New Testament, select Psalms and a 40-day Bible Listening Plan. They are each designed with military specifications for discreet use in low-light conditions, including a red-light-only operation. Each stick runs on a single AAA battery.

According to their website, “many soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines live in cramped quarters with other personnel, in very uncomfortable and challenging circumstances, working hard and putting in long hours every day — too tired to read a Bible, even if they have one.

“The Military BibleStick reaches these service men and women, deployed in some of the most dangerous areas of the world, with God’s Word in audio. It can go with them and sustain them in even the most difficult circumstances.”

The Village Lutheran Church were hopeful of raising enough money to purchase 20 Biblesticks, but the congregation was generous enough to fund the purchase of 25 for soldiers overseas.

“The congregation raised $625 for the Bible Stick project,” Rev. Robert Hartwell, the senior pastor of Village Lutheran Church, noted. “That means 25 service men or women will receive, at no cost to them, a copy of the Bible (New Testament and Psalms) on a convenient flash drive/mp3 player so they can listen to God’s Word wherever they are serving.”
