Daily Life Goes On in Bedford Despite Outages

BEDFORD, N.Y. - Residents were still busy clearing up storm damage this Tuesday, but that didn’t stop them from resuming their daily lives just two days after Tropical Storm Irene hit Bedford—even if that meant without use of electricity.

For some folks, holding pot-luck dinners proved a resourceful way to salvage food that would otherwise go sour without use of a refrigerator. Bedford resident Paul Glaser has been doing that since Sunday night with his neighbors on Brundage Rd.

“We cleaned out our freezer last night and had a mixed feast so food wouldn’t get wasted,” he said.

He, like many others, is also wondering when the power will actually turn back on, but understands that many Westchester residents are in the same position and only time will tell.

“There are thousands of people still out of power and remain out—when NYSEG gets to it, they will as soon as they can,” he said.

As of Tuesday morning, Glaser was able to head to work in New York City but had the unpleasant task of chopping down trees when he came home. One tree actually came down on his property, while another was split apart by the impact of wind and heavy rain.

Bedford Hills dweller, Margaret Conden, has also tried to remain patient with the current electrical situation by continually buying dry ice to keep her food cold.

“I went to the Bedford Fire Department yesterday to get my dry ice on Monday, and have had to drive around to find it since,” she added.

As of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night, a report by NYSEG revealed that 3,500 Bedford customers were still without power.

The Bedford Free Library and the Bedford Hills Free Library were also both closed Tuesday.
