POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- Joan Keating, an active volunteer with the Pound Ridge Land Conservancy, says the group ultimately helps protect the water supply by protecting and conserving land in and around Pound Ridge.

The resulting enhancement of the rural character and the town’s open space is an added benefit for the PRLC. Working to retain the town's strong environmentally minded attitude, and unique charm is what drives Keating's passion.

The Land Conservancy currently manages 357 acres across 17 nature preserves, and is constantly adding to protected open space in and around Pound Ridge. Most of the land has been donated by local families. Founded by resident Ed Russell in 1975 to help protect his own land as a birding sanctuary, the Conservancy has evolved into one of Northern Westchester's most important environmental advocacy groups. "Ultimately, our mission is to both model and teach new behaviors to reduce our human footprint on the natural environment," said Keating, who also works as a Real Estate Broker for William Raveis Real Estate.

The Conservancy's board is run by a group of volunteers who are actively involved in preserving Pound Ridge's natural resources. “Volunteers and Board members have professional experience in a number of critical areas," said Keating. "We’re taking that experience and applying it to the organization and its work in our community. We’re involved in exploring new models of community education in support of local natural resource and open space protection."

The Conservancy has a huge asset in the Armstrong House and its resident Steward, Krista Munger. The house and land were donated by a resident, Dr. Armstrong and the property has become one of the PRLC's most valuable assets. PRLC members volunteer their time each week to preserve the natural features that make Pound Ridge unique. Keating, a long-time Pound Ridge resident, takes pride in the organization's mission and the many volunteers who dedicate time and effort. “Our backyards are the local ecosystem,’’ said Keating. “Protected open space and habitat provide the backbone for our gorgeous green-scape in and around this part of Westchester. People move here for the unique topography, rock outcroppings and water. It’s a real draw and makes Pound Ridge special.”
