Pound Ridge Dems Meet With Congressional Candidate

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – Pound Ridge Democrats met with Dr. Richard Becker at an ice cream social Monday evening for an opportunity to talk to the man they hope will win Tuesday's primary and have the chance to face Rep. Nan Hayworth (R-Mount Kisco) in the race for the 18th Congressional District.

Becke is vying for the nomination against four other candidates: Matthew Alexander, Duane Jackson, Sean Patrick Maloney and Thomas Wilson.

The Pound Ridge Democratic Committee has endorsed Becker in the primary race and Monday night’s event, held at the home of Ali Boak, a Pound Ridge Town Board member, was a chance for other Democrats to meet with Becker and ask questions about his platform.

“We are so fortunate to have so many candidates in this race,” said Roslyn Stone-Pollock, chair of the Pound Ridge Democratic Committee. “We endorsed [Becker] because we believe he can challenge Nan Hayworth and has the best chance to win.”

Becker, a cardiologist and a member of the Cortlandt Town Board, told the crowd that his goal to as a congressman is to help the middle class.

“I believe the middle class deserves safety and security,” he said.

Becker said he got his start in politics by becoming an environmental activist and was eventually asked to join the Cortlandt Zoning Board of Appeals. He said he decided to run for Congress when started to believe that Medicare was being threatened.

The candidate also had praise for his campaign team.

“I have a tremendous organization; we’ve built a terrific team,” he said. “Our fundraising has been at the top and 80 percent of it comes locally.”

Stone-Pollock said that one of the reasons the Pound Ridge Democratic Committee endorsed Becker is that he communicates well and is concerned about each town’s local issues.

“Dr. Becker first come to Pound Ridge back in February and he came to Pound Ridge Pride Day,” she said. “He wants to hear from us.”
