Hyden, a District 4 councilman who has lived downtown for 16 years, has stressed a non-partisan agenda while supporting his colleagues on social, environmental and cultural issues.

On his recently launched re-election website, Hyden – a Democratic who won handily over candidate Kevin Barrett when running for the first time four years ago – rallied support for his cause as he gears up for election season.

“Let’s continue to work together for the future of our city… First time around, I won the City Council election in a landslide, but the work is not yet done,” it states. “It’s time for a New Rochelle renaissance.”

During his first-term, Hyden, who currently runs the Backstreet Gallery on Lawton Street, showed a willingness to ignore party lines as he supported various causes, and notably did not support the Forest City Echo Bay proposal or the Albanese development projects.

“My goal has always been to vote my conscience based on the specific issue at hand without concern about partisan politics,” he said. “I stand on my record and look forward to serving my constituents in the coming term.”

As the city prepares for “the most ambitious downtown redevelopment in New Rochelle history,” Hyden said he is ready to continue bettering the place he and his family has called home for more than two decades.

“I have been honored to represent District 4 for the past three and a half years. To me, this is the most exciting district in New Rochelle, with outstanding residential neighborhoods, the majority of the downtown business district, two colleges, the hospital complex and the transit center,” he said.

“No other city district offers as much opportunity for future development and civic and cultural improvements.”
