Jason Cruz, 26, was in a large group that began shoving each other on the sidewalk near the 237 Martine Ave. parking garage after 3 a.m. Friday, police said. The group walked away after police told them to leave.
Soon after, officers saw Cruz throw a glass bottle that shattered on the ground, police said. He was arrested, but before police searched him, he tried to throw a clear plastic bag under the police car, according to the police report. Police said that as he went to throw the bag, an officer grabbed his arm, causing the bag to fall on the ground. Police said officers recovered the bag and found a small glass bottle with marijuana, a small plastic bag with two hard white rocks they believed to be cocaine and four white pills marked A101. The cocaine weighed a combined 600 milligrams, police said.
Police said they took Cruz to police headquarters, where he was initially cooperative. Cruz began to make threats at officers and spat on the floor after one officer told another prisoner to stop spitting, according to the police report. Police said officers tried to put a spit sock on Cruz to cover his mouth, but he became combative. Cruz wrapped his legs around one officer and tried to bite the officer’s leg while other officers wrestled him off, police said.
He was taken to a holding cell and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony, unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation, and disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor. He was held for court.
