Police were called at 9:12 p.m. after the gas can was discovered at the bottom of an escalator, Stamford Police Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said.

MTA Police were called in and Track 4 was closed and the nearby platform and Station Place roadway were shut down while the investigation continued, police said.

MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan said there was "no real significant impact to train service" and the incident was cleared at 11:36 p.m. after it was discovered there was no threat. An MTA Police K9 unit and the MTA's Emergency Services Unit responded to the scene, Donovan said.

There was some gas in the gas can, Donovan said.

Sgt. Shawinsky said MTA workers said they knew nothing of the gas can.
