Valuables were taken from 10 cars and a Porsche was stolen during a crime spree on the Fourth of July, New Canaan Police Chief Leon Krolikowski said.

On Tuesday, the New Canaan Police Department received complaints from 10 residents that their vehicles had been entered, and valuables were taken, as well as one complaint of a stolen vehicle, the chief said. These thefts occurred during the early morning of July 4.

Vehicles — all of which were not locked —were entered in the areas of Upper Elm Street, Graystone Circle, Millport Avenue, Richmond Hill Road, Sunrise Avenue, and West Hills Road. Wallets, cash, credit cards, drivers’ licenses, a cellphone and other valuables were taken, he sad.

A 2015 Porsche — with the keys inside — was also stolen from Graystone Circle but has been recovered, Krolikowski said. The theft remains under active investigation.

These crimes may have been prevented by following the tips, the chief said:

  • Never leave the keys to your home or car inside a vehicle or in a place where a thief can find them.
  • At night, keep the perimeter of your home and driveway well lit. Low energy lighting switched on and off by photoelectric sensors is a cost-effective way to discourage criminals.
  • Lock all doors and windows of your car and home whenever you leave, day or night, even for a short time. If you have a garage, put your car in it and lock/alarm both the car and the garage. Virtually all of the thefts from vehicles and vehicle thefts that occur in New Canaan involve unlocked vehicles.
  • Never leave valuables in your vehicle. Often, identity theft occurs when drivers’ licenses and credit cards are stolen.
  • Always activate your home and car alarm systems. Many successful crimes occur in in houses or cars that have alarm systems that were not activated.

Call the New Canaan police at 203-594-3500 (or if urgent via 911) for suspicious persons or vehicles in your area. If you see something, say something, Krolikowski said.
