The purpose of the initiative is to prevent pill abuse and theft. The DEA reminds the public that a large number of accidental poisonings and overdoses are due to the accumulation of old medicines.

Last September, the DEA collected more than 244 tons of prescription drugs from more than 5,000 sites through the country, bringing the cumulative total to more than 2 million pounds over five initiatives.

Pound Ridge Police will accept the drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27. The service is free and anonymous. The Pound Ridge Police Station is at 177 Westchester Ave., Pound Ridge.
