The PBA began collecting toys for the charity in 2010 with the help of Scotts Corner Market and Blind Charlie’s Café. More than 400 toys were donated that year. Last year, more than 700 toys were collected – four pickup-truck loads.
“Our collection is running now through Dec. 22, “said Police Sgt. Mike Armistead. “We have drop-off boxes outside the police department, Blind Charlie’s Café and Scotts Corner Market. The boxes are available 24 hours a day.”
Armistead said that while children of all ages need gifts, each year there are certain age/gender groups for which the charity does not receive enough donations.
“Consider donating for an older boy or girl – ages 12 and up – as well as toys for ages 18 months and up,” he said. “The best donations are sporting goods, toy cars, planes and boats, dolls, board games, books, bicycles, scooters, puzzles, models, hand-held video games and small electronics.”
Armistead said to keep in mind that your toy may be the only gift the child receives.
Once again, employees at the Pound Ridge Town House will do their part to help make the drive a success.
Town Clerk Joanne Pace said each year town employees have a holiday luncheon where they exchange secret Santa gifts. For the second year in a row, they have chosen to donate to the toy drive instead.
“We’ve already started to collect some toys,” Pace said. “But most of them we’ll collect at our luncheon. [Last year] we ended up collecting a huge trash bag full of toys. It was rewarding and made us all feel pretty good.”
Armistead said the PBA was grateful for all those who made last year’s drive so successful.
“We hope to bring joy and happiness to even more children this year,” he said.
