NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- New Canaan Police are once again warning residents to lock their cars after a string of thefts from unlocked vehicles carried out by suspected gang members.

"Our department is reminding residents to safeguard their vehicles and property," New Canaan Police said in a message to the town. "Neighboring towns continue to see thefts during the overnight hours of items from unlocked vehicles as well as vehicles being stolen from driveways because the keys are left inside the unlocked vehicle."

Police sent out a number of tips to help residents thwart these thieves. Residents should report any suspicious persons or vehicles to the police department at (203) 594-3500 or call 911 if you see a crime in progress.

"Crime prevention is the best cure," police said.

Do not leave valuables or any financial information in your car, even for just a few minutes. Police said thieves often watches vehicles and strike when they are left alone for only a few minutes. Never leave keys to your car or home inside your car or in a place where a thief can hide them. Thieves know where to look for hidden keys, police said, so putting them in a "secret" hiding place may invite crime.

Residents should keep the perimeter of their home well lit. Police said that low energy lighting that is switched on and off by photoelectric sensors can be a cost-effective way to discourage thieves. Thefts from vehicles often occur in residential driveways. You should also park in well-lit public areas, and avoid parking your car in isolated areas where there is not much traffic. Police said that thefts in New Canaan often occur in parking lots or areas of parks that are isolated.

Always lock all doors and windows of your vehicle whenever you leave it, even for a short while. Use your alarm system, even when you're at home and whenever you leave your house or vehicle, even for a short time. Police said that many successful thefts that occur in town involve houses or cars that have alarm systems that were not activated.
