When Darien police officers responded to 380 Heights Road on reports of a motor vehicle striking a building on Thursday, they found that a 2006 Mercedes SUV had accelerated through a parking spot in front of Embody Fitness Gourmet, police said. The car struck a steel structural pole and continued through the storefront, where it came to a rest.

The driver, a 79-year-old resident of New Canaan, was uninjured in the collision. She told police that she believed she may have pushed the wrong pedal when pulling into the parking spot, causing her car to suddenly accelerate, police said. Nobody else was injured as a result of the crash.

Police said that due to potential structural damage, the Noroton Heights Fire Department responded to make sure the structure was stable. The accident is still under investigation, and there have been no charges brought against the driver.
