NEW CANAAN, Conn. — A 59-year-old New Canaan man and his 18-year-old son were arrested Thursday in connection with an underage drinking party held nearly eight weeks ago in their home where a 17-year-old was injured, police said.
Douglas Knight was charged with interfering with a 911 call. His son, Andrew Knight, was charged with delivery of alcohol to a minor and permitting minors to possess alcoholic liquor.
The case began when New Canaan police received a 911 at 11:24 p.m. March 25 from the Knights' home at 1235 Oenoke Ridge Road. The caller reported that a 17-year-old had fallen down a flight of stairs, police said. A The teen was transported to Norwalk Hospital, police said.
The physician at the Norwalk Hospital Emergency Room told New Canaan police that the victim’s injuries were possibly the result of an assault. The department launched "a lengthy criminal investigation began into what caused the injuries to the victim," police said.New Canaan police officers conducted 30 interviews, executed search and seizure warrants, examined phone records, and conducted an electronic forensic examination as part of the investigation.
But police did not find any witnesses or evidence that an assault occurred. They determined that the victim was hurt after falling down a staircase, police said.
But officers determined that an underage party involving alcohol took place at the Knights' home, and that Andrew Knight had purchased alcoholic beverages in Norwalk, police said.
The homeowner, Douglas Knight, arrived home and instructed those still at the home, who were helping the victim, to not call 911, police said.
Arrest warrants were issued for both men, and they turned themselves in on Thursday. Each was released on $5,000 bond.
Andrew Knight has a court date of May 31 at Norwalk Superior Court. Douglas Knight has a court date of June 1 at Norwalk Superior Court.
