POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – A thief has made off with a piece of American folk art from an exhibit on display at the Pound Ridge Library, library officials said.
A hooked rug was stolen from the exhibit, “Hooked Rugs by Mary Parker: An American Folk Art Goes Local,” but officials aren't sure exactly when the crime took place.
“Mary [Parker] came in to take the exhibit down a couple of days ago and that’s when she noticed it was missing,” said Library Director Marilyn Tinter. “That's the last time she was here was on Feb. 12, so we think it happened between Feb. 12 and Feb. 23.”
The name of the 30-by-30-inch piece is “Vintage Floral” and it’s valued at between $300 and $500.
“We did report it to the police and I gave them a picture of it,” Tinter said.
Parker, a Somers resident, is considered one of the best hook artists in the field. The theme of the exhibit at the Pound Ridge Library was inspired by work Parker had been doing at a historic site in Somers known as the Tomahawk Chapel.
Anyone with information about the missing rug can call the Pound Ridge Police Department at 914-764-4206.
