Victoria Serrano, 20, of Mahopac, told police that she was held up by two unknown men who forced her to hand over $1,000 from the store’s register.

Police said they arrested Serrano after uncovering inconsistencies in her story. An investigation determined that she had made up the incident and had taken the money herself, police said.

Serrano also faces charges of falsely reporting an incident and making a punishable false written statement, police said.

She was arraigned in Somers Town Court before Town Justice Dennis Timone and released in her own recognizance. She is to return to court on Monday, Aug. 31.
