DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. When Derek Kannapin stopped into a local bagel store in Dobbs Ferry on Monday morning, he expected to enjoy a leisurely breakfast after he made his purchase. He probably didnt expect to spend his morning chasing down a larceny in progress but thats just what he did after a group of youths stole from his familys liquor store next door.
As Kannapin stepped out of the bagel shop and onto the sidewalk around 10:45 a.m., he noticed a young male running out of Rochambeau Wines and Liquors with two bottles in his hands. Five other youths were waiting outside and all fled as soon as the items were taken. Kannapin said he chased one of the youths toward a nearby Getty gas station, where he ran into a responding police officer who took over the pursuit.
The Childrens Village students were charged with petty larceny after Dobbs Ferry police apprehended them shortly after the crime, said Dispatcher Eugene Marron. All six students were brought to police headquarters and released later that day with appearance tickets for Westchester Family Court in Yonkers, Marron said. The six individuals charged are all under 16-years-old.
Kannapin said this isnt his first encounter with the group. One of the six juveniles attempted to purchase alcohol last week from Kannapin, he said, and was turned away when he could not produce proof of age.
The one kid I recognized came in last Saturday and I told him look, theres no way youre 21, Kannapin said. I asked him when his birthday was and he said October 1st, but couldnt even come up with a year.
Kannapin said the items stolen Monday were a bottle of Ciroc vodka and another bottle of a different brand of vodka. The items are valued at $50, Kannapin said.
Kannapin said the stores only other theft happened a few years ago.
