To the editor:

Last year, when Pound Ridgers elected Dick Lyman to be town supervisor, he had to give up his town council seat, which was then temporarily filled, and quite ably I might add, by Jon Powers. The seat now comes up for election to fill out the rest of the term of a little more than a year. David Dow is our candidate, and before I ask you for his support, allow me to tell you a little about him. David is currently the President of the Library Board of Trustees, a group of nine individuals whose passion for the library has resulted in a tremendous transformation into the beautiful and vibrant facility that it now is; all while dealing with a massive and costly asbestos removal project. All of this has been done with a budget that barely registers a blip on our property tax bill. Building consensus in order to get huge results on a small budget is no easy feat, but it is a skill that is always very useful and welcome on a town board. David is also heavily involved in the community, as his family owns and operates the Pound Ridge School of Dance. David knows all too well the challenges of doing business in Scotts Corners, and thus will bring the perspective of the local business owner to each and every town board meeting.  David is a scientist and attorney, two very different disciplines that do have some very important things in common- a propensity for critical thinking and a reliance on real evidence in order to make decisions. These are qualities that will be important as all too often emotion tends to play too big a role in many decisions, especially in government. David’s cool, calm, and methodical tendencies will be a natural fit on a board where Dick Lyman’s leadership espouses those same qualities. David is also heavily involved in many local civic activities. You may have seen him volunteering at Pride Day, Harvest Day, Go Green Day, the Cub Scouts, youth sports, and a myriad of other activities. Between these endeavors, his role at the library, and his perspective as a local business owner, this is a person who truly has his finger on the pulse of the community. As you can see, David is an impressive candidate who would be a great addition to the Town Board. He has the qualifications and experience to effectively serve in what could be the “swing” vote seat on the town council. Please join me in voting for David Dow on November 4th.
