NEW CANAAN, Conn. - Claire Tow of New Canaan, former Pound Ridge resident, died July 7. She was 83.

Tow was born Aug. 29, 1930, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of Sigmund and Sadie Schneider. She and her husband have been New Canaan residents for the past 30 years and previously lived in nearby Pound Ridge, N.Y., for 15 years. She attended New York City public schools, Brooklyn College and became an elementary school teacher.

She was a co-founder, with her husband, of the cable television company Century Communications Corporation and the cellular telephone company Centennial Cellular Corporation. She was the president of The Tow Foundation, the charitable foundation she and her husband founded in 1988. She and Leonard are members of the Giving Pledge.

Tow is survived by her husband, Leonard; children, Frank Tow (Ronnie Klein), Andrew (Kathleen) Tow and Emily Tow Jackson and Dean Jackson; and eight grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents.

Calling hours are July 8 and 9 from 2 to 8 p.m. at their home at 160 Lantern Ridge Road, New Canaan. A memorial service and celebration of Tow’s life will be held at a date to be announced.

Contributions in Tow’s name may be made to the ALS Association Greater New York Chapter.
