Westchester's Audra McDonald Wins Record Sixth Tony Award

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Audra McDonald of Croton won her sixth Tony on Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall in New York City to become the Tony Awards' most decorated actress.

McDonald won the award for Best Performance By an Actress in a Leading Role, playing Billie Holiday in "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill."

She has now won six Tony awards for acting. She also won Tony Awards for "Carousel" in 1994, "Master Class" in 1996, "Ragtime" in 1998, "A Raisin in the Sun" in 2004 and The Gershwins’ "Porgy and Bess" in 2012. 

McDonald has also appeared in television series and films, including "Private Practice" and "Wit." She has three Emmy nominations and one Grammy nomination to her credit.

The late Julie Harris, a former Irvington resident who received five Tony awards for performance and one for Lifetime Achievement. Angela Lansbury also received five Tony awards.

The Tony Awards, which honors Broadway's best performers and performances, marked its 68th year.
