WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Westchester County Legislator Peter Harckham will resign his seat after accepting a position with the state government, the legislature's Democratic caucus announced.

Harckham (D-North Salem), previously announced that he would not seek re-election to another term, which takes place this November. Last week, Harckham threw his support to Mount Kisco village Trustee Karen Schleimer, a Democrat who is running for his seat.

Harckham's resignation is effective June 1, the announcement added. Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office announced on Wednesday that Harckham has been appointed as Assistant Director of the Office of Community Renewal.

Harckham represents District 2, which includes Mount Kisco, Bedford, Lewisboro, Pound Ridge, North Salem and part of Somers.

“I am honored to have been appointed by the Governor to serve the people of New York in the Office of Community Renewal," Harckham said in a statement. "This new chapter in my public service will allow me to return to my roots in housing and community renewal work.”

The Board of Legislators will appoint someone to fill Harckham's seat, the caucus' announcement states. It adds that the county charter prohibits the appointee from seeking election to the seat. As a result, whoever is picked will serve as a placeholder for the remainder of the term.

The announcement also recalls Harckham's tenure in the legislature, including his initial election in 2007 and his serving four years as majority leader.
