POUND RIDGE, N.Y. Ten years ago, when Joanne Davis was teaching in the Bronx, she was walking 3 miles a day in an effort to lose some weight. That was when she discovered Curves.
I was always overweight as a child, Davis said, who has a background in early childhood development. Then, in 2001, I passed by a Curves in the Bronx and I went in to check it out to see what they had to offer. I was walking the 3 miles a day, but I was looking for a way to keep exercising.
In October of that year, Davis joined Curves and wound up losing 60 pounds and was able to keep the weight off. Three years later, she joined the Curves staff as a part-time employee. Davis liked the business so much that she decided to buy one of the franchises. When the one on Westchester Avenue in Pound Ridge became available in 2005, Davis made her move.
Curves is an international franchise especially designed for women that offers a complete 30-minute workout and weight management system, said Davis, who moved from the Bronx to Bedford Hills when she took over the Pound Ridge location.
Davis said the hydraulic-resistant machines at Curves are one-of-a-kind and especially designed for a womans body. They work every major muscle group as well as provide a cardiovascular workout.
The cornerstone program at Curves is Curves Smart a computerized personal coaching system. The machines are programed for each members range of strength and fitness and will generate a progress report.
Its pretty innovative, Davis said. The machines are smaller than youd find at other gyms and are based on womans ability. Anyone from 13 to 90 can use them. As you become more fit, the machine will recognize it and expect you to do more.
The club also offers Curves Circuit with Zumba Fitness, where clients perform dance movements to Latin music.
We have an instructor come in who has been certified by the Zumba instructor network, Davis explained.
But not all of the members are there simply to lose weight, Davis said. There are other health factors Curve members try to address as well, such as lowering cholesterol, increasing bone density, lowering blood pressure and reducing stress and anxiety.
Davis said the business has been successful since she took over six years and her clients have been loyal and supportive.
Its a community of support, she said. All our members support each other. They range in age from 20 to 80.
The Pound Ridge Curves was named Franchise of the Year in 2008 by the parent company. It was also named a Shining Star Club by corporate headquarters each year from 2007 to the present, an award doled out to the companys most outstanding franchises.
To mark October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Davis said Curves is over a program in which you can join for a zero-dollar service fee with either proof of a mammogram or a $25 donation to the American Cancer Society. Also for $10, members can get 10 workouts that are to be completed within two weeks.
