Still No Power Restoration Estimates For Pound Ridge

POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – Supervisor Gary Warshauer says no time estimates for power restorations for Pound Ridge have been made by NYSEG as the town enters the fourth day of the post-Hurricane Sandy mess.

NYSEG works to repair power lines on Westchester Avenue hours before Hurricane Sandy actually arrived Monday. Since then, no power has been restored to the town.

Warshauer said coordinating with NYSEG has been “difficult at best.”

Deputy Supervisor John Powers, who also is a member of the Pound Ridge Office of Emergency Management, said the town’s discussions with NYSEG have not netted a concrete answer as to why the restoration efforts are taking so long.

“They say it is a big storm and it’s complicated and more widespread,” Powers said. “We have tree-cutting crews in town, but that’s not we need. We need line crews. We had one line crew there this morning and a promise of more to come.”

Powers said NYSEG told him the problem is all the transmission lines are down and they will be the utility company’s first priority.

“After that, they will get to the individual lines,” he said.

The entire town virtually is without power and many roads remain blocked due to downed trees and power lines.

“The members of the highway department, maintenance department, police department and volunteer fire department have been working tirelessly to clear trees and make roads passable,” Warshauer said. “Some town roads are marginally passable with numerous detours. Please drive only if absolutely necessary so crews can clear trees and wires.”

In the meantime, barbecue will be served up to 5 p.m. Thursday at Scotts Corner Market.

Dry ice and water are available at the town house as supplies last; call 914-764-551 to check on availability before venturing out. The site also will be open Thursday night as a warming center. Check the town's website at www.townofpoundridge.com for additional updates.

The Bedford School District has canceled school for the reminder of the week and the Pound Ridge Town Board meeting for Thursday night has been canceled.
