BUCHANAN, N.Y. -- A power loss at Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant in Buchanan forced a reactor to be shut down Saturday evening.
The reactor is expected to remain shut down through early this week.
"Earlier tonight, the Unit 2 reactor at the Indian Point Nuclear Facility was forced to shut down due to a reported power loss to several control rods," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement Saturday. "The company reports that there was no radioactivity released to the environment. I have directed the Department of Public Service to investigate and monitor the situation and a team is currently en route to Indian Point to begin its work."
Control room operators shut down Unit 2 around 5:30 p.m. Saturday after they observed indication of a power loss to several control rods, Entergy, which runs Indian Point, said.
The cause of the loss of power to the control rods is being investigated, according to Entergy.
Unit 3 was unaffected by the Unit 2 shutdown and continues operating at full power, according to Entergy.
Unit 2 was online for 627 days prior to Saturday's shutdown, Entergy said.
More than 50,000 were suddenly without power for several hours starting Saturday in Rockland, Orange and Sullivan counties following an accident at the Shoemaker Substation in Middletown.
Power was restored in the early morning hours Sunday.
That development is not believed to be related to the Indian Point shutdown.
