“The guys are out on the roads right now picking up logs and branches that could get in the way of plowing,” said Vinnie Duffield, highway superintendent. “Our plows and sanders are all ready to go.”
Duffield said his crew is normally on duty until 3:30 p.m. on weekdays.
“If it’s starting to snow, I will just keep the guys here,” he said. “But if they go home, they know there’s something going on, so they will keep their phones handy if I need to call them back in.”
While this year’s winter weather hasn’t been quite as mild s last year's, Duffield said it has nevertheless been a relatively easy season, fiscally speaking.
“We’ve only used about 25 percent of our $125,000 [snow removal] budget so far,” he said. “We should be fine. Most of the money has been spent on salt and sand. Actually, sometimes the smaller storms are worse because we are always going back out [sanding the roads].”
