POUND RIDGE, N.Y. The Pound Ridge Garden Club and the Pound Ridge Conservation Board are sponsoring scholarships for two students to attend a weeklong environmental summer camp run by the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).
Weve been doing it for as long as I have been here more than 12 years, said Karen Taft, a Conservation Board member.
The program operates four camps around the state. For more information about the program, visit http://www.dec.ny.gov/education/29.html or call 518-402-8014.
Taft said the Pound Ridge campers usually attend the camp in Colby in the Adirondack Mountains and can chose from one of seven weeks ranging from July 1 to Aug. 11.
They have games, swimming, canoe trips, overnight hiking and hunter safety training with permission from the parents, Taft said. They do a lot in one week.
The Pound Ridge scholarships are for youth camp applicants between the ages of 11 to 13. Taft said the scholarship program doesnt usually target teen camp applicants because many teens have jobs and cant apply.
The deadline for the scholarship applications is Jan. 10. Applicants must be Pound Ridge residents. To apply, call Taft at 914-764-3982 or e-mail ktaft@townofpoundridge.com.
