POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- The Pound Ridge Conservation Board is providing information and creative ways on how to discard Christmas trees:
- Cut the large curved branches off and place them over perennials as winter cover to prevent frost heave. Next, cut the trunk into fireplace-size pieces, tie it up with holiday ribbons and store in a dry place. Use the seasoned pieces to start next season’s first fire.
- Extend the holiday for your feathered friends. Move the tree outside and decorate it with strings of popcorn and cranberries. Add pine cones rolled in peanut butter and seed for the birds or just smear the peanut butter directly onto the branches and sprinkle with seed.
- Start a brush pile with the tree and provide shelter year-round for birds, reptiles and small mammals. With time, the tree will decay and return to the soil.
