Pound Ridge Almanac: Ward Pound Ridge Reservation

Ward Pound Ridge Reservation is Westchester County's largest park, covering more than 4,700 acres that straddle Pound Ridge and Lewisboro. The park offers 40 miles of trails for walking, horseback riding and cross-country skiing, as well as fishing in stocked streams, picnicking and camping.

"It's a very popular park," said Mary Kaye Koch, who works in the marketing office of the Westchester County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation

The terrain is varied, with hilly hardwood forest, steep ravines, rock outcroppings, wetlands and open meadows. Dogs are allowed, but must be leashed. Off-trail mountain biking is not allowed.

Despite its size, the park is easy to access, with well-marked trails and maps, Koch said.

The park also has the Trailside Nature Museum, which has exhibits featuring the animals and minerals native to the park, as well as local Indian artifacts from the area. The museum is housed in a Depression-era building constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The county acquired the land for the park in 1938 and named it after William Lukens Ward, who was the Republican county leader for Westchester from 1896 to 1933.Admission is free, and the park is open every day from 8 a.m. until dusk. The main entrance is off Route 121 just off Route 35.
