POUND RIDGE The Bedford School Districts Board of Education has appointed an interim principal to fill the post vacated by retiring Pound Ridge Elementary School principal Peter Politi.
At Thursday nights meeting, the board named Timothy Gembka of New York City to take over the reins of Politi who left July 1.
According to school board member Dr. Eric Karle, the board has been searching for a replacement for Politi since the spring and went through more than 150 candidates, but none of them fit the bill.
We had done a thorough search and vetted numerous candidates and nobody [met the requirements], Karle said. So instead of trying to put a round peg in a square hole we decided to pick an interim candidate.
After the first search failed, the board put out an ad specifically seeking someone to take over the job on an interim basis. It will begin its search for a full-time principal again later this year.
It was mostly a problem with lack of experience, Karle said of the first round of principal candidates. Our criteria are very high. Some of them were very good, but they didnt fit the mold.
Gembka was not an applicant in the search for the permanent post, but applied when the board began its search for a temporary principal.
Most recently, Gembka served as principal for Beginning With Children, a Brooklyn-based charter school, Karle said. Prior to that, Gembka had been an elementary school principal in Ossining.
Karle said the possibility remains of Gembka taking over the Pound Ridge position on a permanent basis if he wishes to apply when the board begins its second search.
