POUND RIDGE, N.Y. – Not even Hurricane Sandy could stop the Pound Ridge Fire Department’s annual Halloween party.

While the Scotts Corners business district was without power last week and the trick-or-treat portion of the event had to be canceled, the Pound Ridge firehouse remained open thanks to a backup generator and held its party on Wednesday.

The Fire Department's 25 members started sleeping at the firehouse the Sunday night before the storm, and the next morning they went on around-the-clock duty until Halloween, according to department spokesperson Patti D’Agostino.

“Members were sleeping on the floor, on cots, and in sleeping bags,” she said. “While communities all around us had to cancel Halloween trick or treating, the members of the Fire Department did not want to disappoint the children and managed to put together the annual Haunted House and Halloween Party while still responding to emergencies."

Along with the Haunted House, the kids were treated to a magic show, candy, doughnuts and cider.

“The party was packed, and parents and kids alike were grateful not only for the welcome relief to be able to talk to friends, comparing notes on their storm experiences, but also to be able to experience a little normalcy among the chaos of the storm,” D’Agostino said.
