NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – A suspicious envelope received in the mail at a county office Friday afternoon is under investigation by the Westchester County Police, Kieran O'Leary, County Police public information officer, said in an email.
The Department of Environmental Facilities alerted the police about the envelope, received at its offices at 270 North Ave. shortly before 1 p.m., O'Leary's email said.
The County Police Hazardous Devices Unit responded shortly after 1 p.m. and conducted an assessment of the envelope and its contents, O’Leary said. The envelope did not contain any explosive, chemical or biological hazard, he said.
“There was no 'white powder' of any kind inside the envelope,” O’Leary said.
The building was evacuated during the incident, O’Leary said. Employees were permitted to return once HDU personnel determined there was no threat to the general public, he said.
The matter remains under investigation by the County Police General Investigations Unit, O'Leary said.
“Because of that investigation, we are not disclosing additional details at this time about the contents of the envelope,” the e-mail said.
