Coast Guard Keeps Hudson Flowing Despite Frigid Temperatures

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- You can't stop science. When temperatures drop below 32 degrees, water freezes, and the Hudson River is no different.

Unlike local lakes and ponds, however, the Hudson River is a vital thoroughfare that delivers vital essentials to New York State and the rest of the northeast, including 70 percent of the heating oil, according to The New York Times. 

Due to record cold temperatures, the Hudson River is frozen solid in up to 1.5 feet of ice north of West Point, The Times said, but Coast Guard cutters continue to work to carve paths through the ice so residents in the region can stay warm.
