Amtrak Crash Latest Deadly Incident Involving NY Passenger Trains

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- The fatal derailment of an Amtrak train headed for New York City from Philadelphia on Tuesday is the latest in a series of railroad disasters with ties to the New York area, according to The New York Daily News. 

Amtrak's fatal derailment is a painful reminder of other recent railroad tragedies, like the  Spuyten Duyvil derailment in 2013.

The first fatal derailment took place in December, 2013 when a Metro-North train headed for Grand Central Terminal took a sharp turn near the Spuyten Duyvil station at more than twice the mandated speed. The derailment killed four people and injured dozens more.

The second fatal crash took place in Valhalla in February when a woman's SUV got stuck on a grade crossing. The Metro-North train collided with the SUV, killing the woman along with five passengers on the train.
